When you read the latest headlines, there is no question that we are heading into a troublesome season for supply chains, especially if you have been importing your packaging from China or other overseas suppliers. All the talk about trade wars and tariffs makes it a good time to consider a “plan B” when it comes to your packaging sources.
What to look for in a new domestic partner:
Packaging Experience – We suggest seeking a company with a proven track record, not just someone trying to jump into the packaging industry or product area just to take advantage of the current turmoil. Our company has been serving USA customers for over 18 years.
Production Accountability and Overview – For most first run jobs we are at the press double and triple checking layout, color accuracy and overall quality. We become your eyes at the plant and will often send you photos from the press. Your satisfaction is our priority and goal.
Product and Application Expertise – We have over 100 years of experience floating around our office. I confess, my wife/co-founder and I have much of it. Our team has been overcoming packaging challenges for a long time, creating well over one thousand designs and solutions.
Trustworthy Material Specs – When our product and pricing is being compared to imported packaging, we usually ask for a sample of their current product. This is because in some cases, the customer is not receiving what they order. Example, they believe they are receiving 200# test equivalent corrugated board, but we determine they are getting board that is 32ECT or even thinner. Low prices can come at a steep cost.
Sustainability claims – Much like material specs above, are your overseas suppliers’ sustainability claims legitimate? We recently reviewed a sample that was supposed to be printed with a flexographic print process, using water based, eco-friendly inks. After careful examination, we determined the box was printed using digital equipment, with solvent-based inks.
Cost consistency – In the current worldwide economic and political climate, a domestic source can offer price stability that an offshore manufacturing plant may not be able to offer, maintain, or guarantee.
Terms and Conditions- Same as above. Will a dramatic change in the monetary exchange rate impact your orders already placed. Or what about your cost on the next replenishment order? Would a payment or credit program help your company?
Delivery Commitment – Our lead time on a first-time order on most of our products is a solid 2 to 3 weeks. On repeat orders it can even be a week shorter. It is unlikely any foreign manufacturer can provide that type of service and delivery.
This blog post is not to criticize others or attempt to frighten anyone currently importing their packaging. In these uncertain times, it is always good to know what options you have available.
Eighteen years ago, long before the current turmoil, we made a conscious decision to offer only products made in the USA. That decision was based on four things:
- Availability/lead times
- Consistent quality
- Service and Communication
- Freight and shipping costs
Our goal is to make ourselves easy to work with. We are always open to a conference call to discuss your specific needs and concerns. Everyone’s situation is different and whether you choose us as a supplier or not, we will be glad to share our experience at no cost to be a good informational resource to you. Call us at 630-551-1700 or contact us through the web site. We look forward to chatting with you and helping you through the days ahead.
