Sustainable Packaging for Sustainable Wineries and Wine Clubs

We have witnessed a lot of trends and fads come and go in the past few decades of our work in providing shipping solutions and packaging design. Sustainability is not one of them. Gratefully, sustainable practices have been incorporated into almost any product and facet of most companies. Everything from energy consumption to use of natural resources is a concern for all consumers and businesses including one of our favorites, the makers of environmentally and socially responsible wine.

What Are Sustainably Grown Wines?

The experts will probably take issue with this but for the purpose of this packaging conversation, the term sustainable for us includes organically and biodynamically grown wines. This is not a post written about the many different types of wine and how they are grown, but I encourage our readers to do more research if that is their area of interest. Our focus in this post is about the packaging used to ship these eco-conscious wines.

Is Your Packaging Consistent with Your Marketing?

Over a decade ago we coined a packaging term we called eco-consistency. The simple definition back then was if you are selling a green product to a green consumer, your packaging should be green as well. No more shipping organically grown cotton baby clothes in plastic mailer bags and eliminating the use of void fill materials such as bubble wrap, molded foam or especially foam peanuts. This approach, however, created a dilemma for many shippers of glass products and offered very few effective and environmentally acceptable packaging options. The key and solution is paper-based internal packaging with a high percentage of recycled content that can be recycled easily at curbside for most consumers.

Balancing Protection and Presentation.

That is also the title of a blog post I wrote some time ago (link below) where we discussed the fact that protection is simply not enough. In this e-commerce world we live in, the unboxing experience is equally important. So, unwrapping a bottle of wine from a shroud of foam or bubble wrap is no longer considered a quality presentation. Digging for it in a box full of loose void fill is messy and unacceptable. Opening a molded foam clamshell that hides the product being shipped is not an Instagram or Facebook moment.

100% recyclable wine shipper from Salazar PackagingAn Exciting New Wine Shipper!

We recently created and launched a new product that we are very hopeful will fill that void of a totally recyclable bottle shipper that is protective and makes a great presentation. It can also be custom printed inside and out using a flexographic or digital process with your brand or graphic design.
