01 Feb 2012 This is a GREAT Time to Use or Convert from Plastic to Water-Activated Adhesive, Reinforced Paper Tape!

[caption id="attachment_3155" align="alignright" width="300"]Custom Printed paper tape samples CUSTOM-PRINTED PAPER TAPE SAMPLES[/caption] In previous posts, we have provided numerous reasons why paper tape is “greener” than plastic tape, and these include the fact that it is biodegradable and repulpable. From a performance perspective, it also adheres better to corrugated creating a stronger box, better protecting the contents from damage, tampering or pilferage. Please see the list of recent Inside Sustainable Packaging and Green Packaging Group posts on this topic at the bottom of this post. What makes this an ideal time to use water-activated tape (WAT) or convert to it?

18 Jan 2012 Green Packaging for Cell Phone and Electronics Replacement Can also Reduce Costs

[caption id="attachment_3133" align="alignright" width="300"]Green packaging for cell phone exchanges GREEN PACKAGING FOR CELL PHONE EXCHANGES[/caption] There are a number of industries that routinely ship out products such as cell phones, tablets, laptops and a variety of other electronic devices. This is often times done for replacement or loaner purposes when products are being exchanged or returned. Whatever the reason for the back and forth or “round trip” shipment, the end result is usually excess packaging and higher cost in an already expensive but necessary part of your business. Usually, we are quick to suggest the use of one packaging material, rather than two, but there are unique applications when combining two different packaging components can result in savings and provide a greener solution.

07 Dec 2011 Sustainable Retail Packaging for Candy – SWEET!

[caption id="attachment_3067" align="alignright" width="300" caption="100% RECYCLED CONTENT RETAIL CARTONS"]100 percent recycled content retail cartons[/caption] The term “so good it melts in your mouth” is over-hyped and so over used it has nearly lost all meaning. However, it really is an accurate description of the candy product made by one of our newest Globe Guard customers. Barbary Brix is a San Francisco-based company that makes candy the way it used to be made before high-production equipment and cost-saving recipes became the norm. Check out the delicious assortment of unique flavors they offer on their online Barbary Brix candy store. My wife was almost immediately addicted to their “Salty Dog” flavor, and as one who enjoys nuts with his caramel, I am now a huge fan of “The Prospector.”

02 Dec 2011 Globe Guard® Reusable Box Sealer Brings Order to Warehouse Chaos

[caption id="attachment_3045" align="alignright" width="300"]Before the GGRBS is used BEFORE THE GGRBS IS USED.[/caption] Decades ago, when I first entered the warehousing and distribution industry, one of the very first things I was taught is that it does not cost much to keep stored product “in good order.” On the other hand, not keeping inventory in neat, organized condition can prove very costly in the form of picking mistakes, damage, lost product and even pilferage. In addition, when boxes on shelves look good, the entire warehouse appears cleaner and better managed.

21 Oct 2011 Sustainable Packaging Dilemma – When Bad Packaging Gets Worse

Box in need of helpI’ll put it bluntly but politely - most secondary packaging (boxes, tape, etc.) we receive from overseas is not very good. People have shared countless stories with us about boxes that smell funny, are weak, thinner than expected, don’t stack well, don’t hold up in shipment, etc. And it matters little whether the packaging originates in China, India or almost any place else on the globe. Domestically produced boxes, even boxes like our 100% recycled content Globe Guard® boxes, are better and stronger than the vast majority of corrugated boxes that are used to ship the imported products we all purchase. It is widely accepted that when the US buyer negotiates a lower price with a foreign manufacturer, one of the areas that is most easily cheapened is the packaging used for shipping it here.

18 Oct 2011 A Great Green Idea Deserves Great Green Packaging

Paper board carton over corrugated shipping boxPrograms that send new or promotional product samples to the home have been around for a while, but in most cases they are directed and financed by manufacturers eager to get their products into consumers' hands. The Conscious Box is different in that manufacturers cannot “buy” their way into your home. The products are carefully reviewed and approved for their authenticity as well as for the value they deliver to subscribers. The program is also an excellent way for consumer/subscribers to learn about and try new fair trade or eco-friendly products offered by small- to mid-size manufacturers.

13 Oct 2011 Pick and Pack Challenge – Keeping Open Product Clean

Globe Guard® Reusable Box Sealer™I have visited some of the cleanest, neatest, pick-and-pack fulfillment warehouses in the country, yet I have never seen one that does not create and accumulate dust. Between paper dust from boxes, paper void fill and from the products themselves, or even from fork lift use, slow moving or seasonal products can look very old and very dirty in no time at all. We’ve all seen open boxes in a warehouse covered with dust, but what we don’t always see is the products within or how often they have to be discarded because they are no longer sellable. Or, worse yet, when customers complain because they received the item they ordered and it looks soiled or used.

PureologyL’Oreal is serious about sustainability, and that commitment goes well beyond the surface. You might say like beauty, it’s more than skin deep. They have proactively helped lead the cosmetics industry, making their products and primary packaging as sustainable as possible. I am pleased to say they also see the value of making their secondary packaging consistent with everything else they do and believe. This world famous French company consists of 27 different brands, many of which are household names. Domestically in the U.S., they include retail consumer brands like Maybelline, Softsheen and Garnier, as well as professional product lines including Matrix, Redken and Pureology, to name just a few.

13 Sep 2011 Sustainable Packaging – Hanesbrands and Globe Guard® Products Are a Good Fit

Globe Guard custom printed shipping envelopes for HanesWhen the nice people at Hanes first contacted us, they were looking for a product they could use to ship out a sample of their ComfortBlend tee shirt with Eco Smart® fiber for a special promotion. They were absolutely certain about three things:
  1. The container or mailer they used had to be green. Ideally with a high percentage of recycled content and definitely 100% recyclable as well.
  2. They wanted to be able to custom print it in relatively small quantities with their brand/logo and other product/environmental information.
  3. As is often the case with projects and promotions, they were rapidly running out of time to meet their deadline.
