Salazar Packaging Celebrates 10 Years

I could share a lot of history about our unique company we started ten years ago in the dining room of our home, but I realize it does not really matter to anyone but those of us who have lived it.

What is important is that thanks to a lot of good friends, manufacturing partners, and most of all to our many customers, we survived a tough and difficult economy by providing exceptional quality, and service and creating a company that is by all accounts, different.

Transparency is Key

We learned early when people order custom packaging from us, they are actually trusting us with their brand, their company, and in some cases their future. To earn that trust, we have created a company that is wide open in terms of what we do and how we do it.

Our web sites and especially our blogs are industry leaders in terms of information sharing. The goal is always helping our customers make informed decisions about their packaging and delivering the best, greenest, and most attractive packaging possible at the lowest potential cost. We believe in providing options so that a customer will never be surprised or experience regrets because of their lack of packaging experience.

Experience Matters

We had a distinct advantage when we started our company; my wife Lenora and I had over thirty years of combined experience in the packaging industry. With a firm grip on materials and applications, we also had the contacts within the industry to identify the best of the best in terms of manufacturing partners. We understood that it was not practical or possible to try to do everything well so we carefully chose our in–house capabilities and were even more selective when determining the people we could count on to supplement our efforts with specialized technical and productivity know how in many locations around the nation.

The first ten years have been amazing and we have gained a long list of customer friends and helped create some of the industry’s best looking boxes.

We also no longer operate out of our dining room. Perhaps the best one word description of how we feel is perfectly communicated by the painting below that now adorns the lobby our new customer service center. All we can say is thank you!

27 Jan 2017 Akamai Selects Salazar Packaging For New Line of Natural Personal Care Products.

Akamai box exterior, Salazar Packaging, custom printing, e-commerce, subscription packagingAkamai Selects Salazar Packaging For New Line of Natural Personal Care Products.

Akamai is a Hawaiian word meaning wise or intelligent and it perfectly describes this new company’s approach to some of the most personal care products you and I use. You can learn a lot more about this unique company and product line at their website: www.akamaibasics.com

The Akamai Approach to Packaging

The words “wise” and “intelligent” also apply to their packaging which we were selected to make for them. The photos included in this post show a basic one color on Kraft exterior and an eye catching one color print inside.

The graphics are simple, yet effective, and they prove once again that you do not have to use a variety of colors or a lot of ink coverage to create a positive unboxing experience for your customers.

branding, custom printing, Salazar PackagingInside Print Makes a Big Difference

Subscription box and E-commerce companies have learned that an outside print is good. This Akamai box would still be a nice box even if the inside print was eliminated. However, we remind people that outside print is often dominated by the shipping label, especially on a small box like this.

The inside of the box will always arrive clean and is a great place to reinforce your brand and deliver the message you want. Anything from a simple thank you or a sales pitch for additional products can be easily and inexpensively added to the inside of any shipping box. Keep in mind if you are not ready for inside print, it can be added at a future date. (See first related post below).

If you want to try some great new personal care products, check out our friends at Akami. If you want help to create a great looking, inexpensive package for your product line, please contact Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700.

20 Oct 2016 Design Options for E-Commerce and Subscription Boxes

custom printing, salazar packaging, One of the most commonly asked questions is “what are my options”? The question is typically asked by people who are interested in enhancing the customer experience and making their boxes stand out in an increasingly crowded marketplace.

With Volume Comes Options

It may seem unfair, but the sad fact is that the number of creative options available to you increase as the order size increases. Some of the most attractive design options are basically cost prohibitive on a cost per piece and/or in terms of preproduction costs. There are no hard and fast rules and much also depends on the graphic design, but here is the way it basically breaks down:

Low speed, low volume digital printing – We do NOT offer this type of printing but it is usually the best option for people needing under 100 boxes or even up to as many as 1,000, especially if the graphic design is more complex with many colors. It may require some art or prep charges but no print plates are necessary, making it ideal for onetime runs. Depending on quantity, it may require a one-time cutting die and that cost can vary from a few hundred to much more depending on the box size and how many impressions are being printed at one time.

Flexographic printing – This is the most popular option and we have a very low but firm 1,000 minimum. It has some limitations in terms of graphics, and each color requires a one-time investment in a print plate and possibly a cutting die. Using one of our over 120 popular stock die sizes eliminates the die cost. Compared to Digital, flexo is always going to be substantially lower in cost.

High speed digital printing – Basically the same pros (great graphics, no plates) and cons (higher cost) as low speed digital but at a reduced cost because it runs at higher speeds. Rarely is this a good option for orders under 1,000 boxes.

Laminated sheet or board – It is often called litho labeling and that tends to be misleading because it is not a label in the traditional sense. The print limitations of flexographic printing directly on corrugated are eliminated by printing on a higher quality substrate using an offset process. That means that many colors, great images, glossy finishes or just about anything is possible. The printing is typically done on an 80# paper for a top sheet lamination application or SBS board, usually 10 pt, for an Asitrade type lamination. It can get complicated, but we make it simple and affordable.

Due to board minimums, your minimum will vary from around 3,000 to as much as 8,000, depending on the size of the box being printed. The cost will be higher than standard flexo, but the graphic possibilities are unlimited. The cost of traditional flexo print plates is also avoided, which can really add up on a four or five color design.

Which Printing Process is Best for You?

Our branded packaging advisors are well trained and experienced to help you make that decision. The factors that will be considered include:

  • Order quantity
  • Order frequency (one time or repeating)
  • Graphic design
  • Timetable
  • Cost per box limitations
  • Budget for pre-production costs

By offering a complete menu of printing options, after all factors are considered, we are sure to guide you to the best solution for your specific application. Contact us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700 for a confidential, no cost, and no obligation application review.

13 Sep 2016 Corrugated Box Increase Coming!

rising-corrugated-box-pricesIt has been over three years since the corrugated industry has had an increase so it should not be a total surprise, and I don’t want to be guilty of sounding a false or premature alarm, but it presently looks like an increase is inevitable and imminent.

This is NOT a Formal Increase Announcement…Yet.

All domestic corrugated sheet manufacturers have been announcing increases of between 8 and 10% and it is beginning to trickle down to the companies that make corrugated boxes from that higher priced board. Some stock box suppliers have already announced a 10% increase but we are not there yet. It is our intention to resist and delay any increase as long as possible and not put through an increase that hopefully might be rescinded in part or in whole.

So we are all in a wait-and-see mode and keep in mind, I could be wrong. Please see the bottom related post below where in May 2013 I warned of an increase that was later rolled back. However, now I think an increase is really overdue and the mills are going to get something.

No one likes to see rising prices but I am equally concerned about what this can do to lead times as we head into the busiest time of the packaging year. Any increase, especially a large one can and will cause extended lead times.

Our Advice to All Friends and Customers

Not knowing exactly when an increase on boxes is going to be announced and enforced, my suggestion is to not wait to place any year end or holiday order you may be contemplating. If you wait until the increase becomes fact, it will probably already be too late and the normal lead time could jump quickly from a fairly predictable one to two weeks to as much as four weeks or even more. There will be a big buy-in to avoid any increase and that will make the production line a long one.

Please do not hesitate to contact us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700 if you have any questions. We may not have all the answers regarding this industry wide increase but I can assure you we will do everything possible to minimize the negative impact on you and your business.

03 Sep 2015 Why Use Globe Guard® Stock Mailer Boxes?

Globe Guard Stock Unprinted Subscription BoxesIf you are pre-launch or just getting started on your subscription box or e-commerce program, there is no better or more eco-friendly way to begin shipping your customers’ orders. Globe Guard® boxes are always at least 60% recycled content, as well as 100% recyclable, repulpable, biodegradable and even compostable.

Professional packaging look/ Small Investment

The most important benefit they provide a startup company or product is the fact that only a minimal investment is necessary. You can select a stock, popular size from our mailer box section of our www.GlobeGuardProducts.com store and order a bundle of as few as 25 or 50 boxes. Adding a custom printed label provides the initial branding and you are on your way!

A partial group of subscription boxes we've runWe know many have been dreaming for weeks, months, or even years about the way their custom printed box is going to look. Some sadly discover their vision is not practical or in some cases, even printable. Using a stock box can help a company get started until the business and volume can help justify the vision.

Additional benefits of using a stock box in the beginning

Above and beyond the minimal investment mentioned above, and saving money at a time when you may have zero or little cash flow, there are other advantages of using a stock, unprinted Globe Guard ® box:

  • They make it easy to implement a packaging “plan B” if necessary.

What if your initial box ends up being too short, to narrow, or too tall? You start out with no history about products, customer preferences or volume, so everything is essentially a guess. If you guess wrong, changing sizes is so much easier and less expensive if you haven’t already invested possibly hundreds or even thousands of dollars in a cutting die, print plates, or a minimum order quantity (MOQ) of 1,000 boxes.

  • Custom printing is inflexible.

I often tell people the true story of how we rebranded our company six months after we officially launched. Customer feedback indicated the name was too long and our tag line and logo confusing. So before we had too much invested in our initial brand, we chose to re-brand. The less you have invested the better until you gain some of that all important customer feedback.

  • Converting to custom printed boxes is a breeze, when you are ready!

If you have been using one of our stock, unprinted boxes, and the size is working perfectly for you, and your volume and cash flow grow, we can easily begin custom printing that specific box size for you. We can grow as you grow with a basic one color design to get started, maybe you add a second exterior color later, and then possibly you add inside print as your brand grows and you are ready to eliminate some more manually applied stickers and labels.

When is the right time to switch to custom printed boxes?

The answer varies from one situation to another mostly focused on affordability and how sure you are that you will not be making any other changes soon. Print plates cannot be modified so the goals are no regrets and no unnecessary expenses. I usually suggest waiting at least 90 days after launch or when you get up to 300 to 400 shipments or subscribers per month

As always, if in doubt, email us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700. We will be glad to discuss your specific needs with you.

17 Aug 2015 Globe Guard® Min-Weight™ Boxes Maximize Customer Value and Minimize Shipping costs for Universal Yums

One color on white Min-Weight boxesCurrently shipping costs are rising much faster than profit margins for many e-commerce and subscription box brand owners. Some take the easy route and simply reduce the size and weight of the boxes they ship by simply giving their customers less.

The people at Universal Yums were determined to continue providing their customers with as much of their delicious international treats as possible. It was that commitment that first caught our attention. They asked us to help engineer a solution that would eliminate unnecessary, redundant corrugated board and it was not nearly as simple as it sounds. Eliminating corrugated board to reduce overall package weight can be tricky because you do not want to reduce the box design’s strength. As we tell people, the problem is not your three pound package, it is the thirty pound package that ends up on top of yours, that creates the problem.

A peek inside a Min-Weight boxDesign, Redesign and Testing Produces Great Results

“Every ounce counts” was the customer’s direction so we started strategically eliminating board that we thought would not weaken the box’s strength. We worked with different cut outs and a variety of board grades and quite frankly, not all of our designs satisfied the requirements. Our designers created multiple versions before we arrived at the following:

  1. Top tuck mailer that is 10-1/2” X 8-1/2” X 3-1/2” – empty weight of approximately 5.4 ounces* custom printed
  2. Top tuck mailer that is 8” X 5” X 3” – empty weight of approximately 2.8 ounces* custom printed

*NOTE- paper/board weight varies and printing ink adds weight as well so our   recommendation is always to stay well under target weight to avoid going over.

Min-Weight™ Boxes Now Available For You!

We liked this design and results so much that we decided to add these two cutting dies to our inventory of over 45 different available sizes and styles. If they are not the correct size for you, talk to us about a custom print, custom size, that will help you promote your brand while helping you reduce your shipping costs.

Contact us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700 if you have any questions, would like to see samples or would like to discuss your specific needs. We recently helped a customer reduce their shipping costs by $2.00 per box by keeping their box under the USPS one pound rate, and we can probably help you achieve similar results.

21 Jul 2015 Enhance Your Consumer’s Experience with Scored Pad Dividers

50-50 longitudinal scored pad insert dividerIs there anything more disappointing than opening up an eagerly anticipated e-commerce or subscription box package only to find everything that was carefully packed is now an unrecognizable heap? Many of our customers work very hard to create a great presentation for their customers with custom printed branded shipping boxes, color coordinated tissue, interior box graphics and a variety of other techniques, all designed to impress. However, the trip from their facility to their customer’s address can be a long, brutal trip, and what looks great going out, typically does not look so good when it arrives. Fortunately, there is a fix for that.

What are scored pad dividers?

They are typically corrugated board inserts that are designed to separate products to prevent damage or simply present better. It may sound extreme but imagine shipping a 12 ounce soft drink can with a bag of potato chips. No matter how carefully you pack them, it is very likely the potato chips will arrive crushed. If you shipped a pair of sunglasses and a tee shirt, wouldn’t both items look better if there was a partition separating them?

75-25 cross directional divider insert

75-25 cross directinal insert in stock box

What about cutting dies and changes?

The best part about scored pads is that for the vast majority of applications NO CUTTING DIE is required so they can be changed at will with no cost.

Let’s say your box has an 8” long X 4” wide packing area. This month because of the products you are shipping, you would prefer a 50/50 cross directional divider creating two cells that are each 4” X 4”. However next month you are shipping a long, small product like a pen and would like a 1” X 8” longitudinal divider? No problem, no die cost!

If you require slots, holes, rounded corner, cut-outs, etc. then a cutting die will be needed, but a simple divider as shown in the photos is tool-less.

What about colors or printing?

The two basic board color options are white or natural Kraft (brown) board. Custom prints and color are available but minimums will apply and print plates will be required.

Aside from appearance, are there any additional benefits?

Scored pad dividers ship and arrive flat and are formed as needed so they take up very little space compared to most forms of void fill or cushioning. Typically they weigh less so shipping costs inbound (to you) and outbound (to your customer) are also minimized. In some cases box sizes can even be reduced. The greatest savings, however, may be a reduction of labor because void fill can be very time consuming. Packers can usually pack and ship more boxes per hour decreasing cost and increasing productivity.

Scored pad dividers are not the best internal packaging solution for every application but for many, they can be. Except for the very largest applications, the minimum is 1,000 and depending on size, the minimum might be higher for custom printed applications.

For a free, no cost, no obligation review of your application, please contact us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700. We can probably create a mock up and help you determine if it is indeed the best option for you and your products.

19 Jun 2015 Four New Die Cut Mailer Box Sizes Available and on Sale!

10 X 8.5 X 4 lock front B-flute mailerWe are very pleased to announce the addition of four new corrugated mailer boxes to the list of stock boxes on our green packaging store – www.GlobeGuardProducts.com

What is the difference between a die cut mailer and a standard RSC shipping box?

An RSC (regular slotted container) box most commonly used has four flaps on top and four flaps on the bottom, and is sealed using two pieces of tape. A die cut mailer has a hinged lid that allows it to open like a cigar box and can be tuck top or front lock in design for a little extra security. We refer to the die cut mailer as more of a presentation box because it is typically more attractive and easier to open, making it ideal for subscription and e-commerce applications.

If your focus is custom printed, branded boxes, why are you adding more unprinted sizes to your inventory?

There are really several good reasons including:

  1. Not all of our customers are ready for branded packaging because of order minimums (1,000 boxes) or perhaps because of size uncertainty.
  2. Even large volume, custom print customers occasionally have a need for a different (unprinted) size for a particular product or promotion.
  3. Art is being developed or a rebranding is anticipated
  4. Starting off with a stock, unprinted size permits a smoother transition into custom printed boxes later.

The four new sizes of die cut mailer boxes

5x4x35” X 4” X 3” lock front, B-flute mailer– this is more of a reintroduction because it was a stock item and was eliminated due to sluggish sales. More recently we have been overwhelmed by inquiries from jewelry, e-juice and other people looking for a small, secure mailer box. Keep in mind, it can be custom printed in a low 1,000 box minimum.

8.75 x 5.75 x 2.75 E-flute stock mailer8-3/4” X 5-3/4” X 2-3/4”  lock front, E-flute mailer – E-flute is thinner, providing a more retail, less industrial look for our customers who want a more attractive presentation box. This new size ships well and is ideal for anything from snacks to cosmetics.

10” X 8-1/2” X 4” – (shown above) lock front, B-flute mailer – This box was added for everyone looking for something “just a little smaller” than our very popular 12-1/4” X 9-1/4” X 4” box. Since size matters in the new “dimensional rate” world, it is perfect for pet treats, snacks, and other subscription boxes.

11 x 12x 2 top tuck, E-flute mailer11” X 12” X 2” – top tuck, E-flute mailer – The E-flute makes this box as sharp looking as it is strong. It is the perfect presentation box for retail or e-commerce, especially for apparel such as baby clothes or designer tee shirts.

Let us know if you have any questions on any of these new items or if you would like to see a sample. Pricing and other details are available in the “corrugated mailer” section of our Globe Guard store and please remember, the introductory sale prices are good only through August 31, 2015. .
