04 Sep 2017 Printed Die Cut Corrugated Inserts for Ecommerce and Subscription Boxes.

insert printed to contrast interior, Salazar Packaging, Printed Die Cut Corrugated Inserts for Ecommerce and Subscription Boxes

We are one of the largest printers of high end corrugated shipping containers in the country, leading the trends such as printing inside the box when most companies’ idea of branding is printing a logo on the outside. As part of the effort to create a unique and positive unboxing experience, we have also led in the design of product and application specific (custom) inserts to protect as well as present the products being shipped. (see first related post below)

We offer inserts of every type and design including molded foam, molded pulp, die cut paperboard and our favorite – die cut corrugated.

Corrugated inserts remain our most popular option because they are relatively low in cost, have low minimums (1,000 MOQ), tooling is reasonably priced, they are very versatile in terms of product display, and can be easily replaced as your products or combinations change. They have also become a customer favorite because they can be easily and inexpensively printed.

custom printed box and insert, Salazar packagingAre White and Kraft the best Options?

The lowest cost option is to not print an insert at all. Leaving it unprinted natural Kraft (brown) or paying a small upcharge for white is a great way to minimize cost and keeping your packaging simple. Whether unprinted is the best option for you depends on what you are going to do with the inside of the box and the color of the product itself. You never want to take attention away from the product and if the inside of the box is unprinted, you may want to go with a simple, unprinted white or Kraft (natural brown) insert as well.

Solid, flood coat colors on your inserts?

In other situations, a flood coat of a contrasting or complimentary color is a great option because it provides color at minimal cost and really dresses up the inside of the box. If there is no copy and it is a simple flood coat (edge to edge) of one color, you may not even need to purchase a print plate. That helps make color quite affordable and can easily be changed if necessary.

insert printed to match interior, Salazar PackagingCustom printed inserts

Keep in mind in most cases, the corrugated insert is die cut with cavities to hold the product so you may not have a large, unobstructed canvas to work with. This makes it an ideal place for a subtle, random repeat pattern such as a logo diagonally printed across the entire surface. One additional advantage of a random repeat pattern is that the same print plate can be used for a variety of different insert sizes and product combinations creating a very attractive, classy finish at minimal start-up cost.

While we are big fans of random repeat printing on inserts, in other situations you may have some specific, print registered copy you want printed such as a thank you, instructions, part number, etc.

Either way, corrugated inserts can help make your packaging unique and memorable in addition to creating a great presentation and keeping your product safe during transit.

Whether you are creating a new e-commerce box or giving an existing sub box a much-needed face lift, we know how to do it without adding a great deal of cost. In fact, compared to preprinted labels, they usually produce a net savings.

Please contact us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700 to discuss your project with one of our experienced branded packaging advisors. There is no cost and no obligation and you will be glad you did.

One of the fastest growing areas of e-commerce is snacks, ranging from health-conscious options to some that are just delicious and do not claim any health benefit at all. In either case, they taste good and satisfy a need with a product that thanks to ecommerce and subscription programs, can be conveniently delivered to your mailbox.

One of our most unusual and recent success stories is our friends at www.edoughble.com Check out their website to see the delicious flavors and box assortments they offer of their edible cookie dough products.

It was the variety of gift pack options that made their packaging a challenge. Different size containers, different counts, with and without flavor packs. You can see just a few of their most popular combinations from the attached photo.

We reviewed all of their products and combinations, and helped them create a packaging design that uses only two different size boxes and six different inserts to minimize the number of packaging SKU’s and reduce their overall packaging costs. Branding and efficiency was the goal, and the end results speak for themselves.

02 Aug 2017 Packaging That Communicates

Happy Egg exteriorPackaging That Communicates

For us it is more than a tag line or slogan, it is what we believe and our primary objective on every order we accept. We appreciate packaging that does this well, even if we are not the manufacturer. What does your packaging say about you? Please see the photos included in this post for a great example of branded packaging done well!

Happy Eggs?

We are not in the molded pulp egg tray business, but we love the packaging for this new brand of eggs my wife/partner just picked up at the local grocery store. You can imagine how the unique color stands out on a shelf full of natural (boring) color molded trays, foam and pulp alike. The Happy Egg people are not afraid of color and for little additional cost, created a bright yellow, very eye-catching container that truly pops off the shelf.

To communicate the necessary food details as well as their branding message, they opted for a full color label applied to the outside that lists all the required information and explains why their hens are so happy and lay better quality eggs.

But wait, there’s more!

Happy Egg Company molded pulp interiorJust like the surprise bonus ending at the end of an otherwise routine TV commercial, the Happy Egg Company took advantage of the inside lid (others typically leave blank) and applied an additional full color label. In case you missed the message outside, the inside shows a chart comparing space per hen in their process compared to others. Happy hens apparently lay better quality eggs and theirs are the happiest.

What is the message of your packaging?

Is your message as obvious and clear as that of the Happy Egg Company? As e-commerce packaging continues to compete and be compared to retail packaging, we can learn a lot from this application.

  • Focus on what you want your customer to remember
  • Don’t shy away from being different or colorful
  • Take advantage of every available space
  • Do not hesitate to repeat your message, differently each time.

Many people make the mistake of assuming great e-commerce packaging is expensive but it does not have to be. Check out our gallery to see a great selection of attractive, attention grabbing boxes and here is our surprise ending – nearly all of them are basic one or two colors, flexographic printing, which is the least expensive printing available.

If, however you need something beyond flexographic, we are also experienced and can help you with your litho label or digital printed design as well. There is literally nothing you can imagine and that we cannot recreate on your packaging.

Regardless of the process or medium used, we will deliver a great looking package at the lowest possible cost per unit. Call us at 630-551-1700 or contact us at Salazar Packaging to discuss how we can make you and your packaging as happy as the Happy Egg Company hens!

E-Commerce and Subscriptions Packaging for Books

Boxes for books with inside print, e-commerce packaging, subscription packaging, book packagingA few decades ago I recall listening to a speaker warning we were heading toward a “paperless society”. Since I was at that time employed by the largest paper and packaging corporation in the world, his message caused much distress. Then a decade later, others were telling us that printed matter, especially books, would soon be extinct due to the internet.

The fact is that we now consume more paper than ever before and people are still indeed purchasing and enjoying books. What has changed however is where and how people buy books. The corner book store has been eliminated in favor of large internet marketers and we have also discovered books are a great product for specialized subscription programs. Specific genres such as mystery, horror, children’s and others can be delivered directly to your doorstep.

The above photo shows a few of the many boxes we have created by using our “semi-custom” program to give brand owners unique identity while utilizing some “standard” box sizes designed to fit standard book sizes. Of course, if you want or need a completely custom size or structural design, we can do that for you as well, but our semi-custom program is ideal for customers whose sizes and quantity needs vary month to month, are working with a limited budget, and/or need custom printed boxes in a hurry.

The Difference Between Custom and Semi-Custom E-commerce Boxes

When you go custom, you will need a custom cutting die costing around $800 (onetime expense) but you can decide the exact box dimensions, the board grade, and specific structural features such as an easy open perforation, locking tabs, etc.

On a semi-custom box, the cutting die has been made so many of those decisions have already been made for you. You can still customize the way a box is printed or decorated, but the size, board grade, and box features are predetermined. We usually describe it as the difference between buying “off the rack” or “custom tailored”.

Neither option is better, but semi-custom can save money and precious time. We still provide die lines so you can design your interior or exterior graphics any way you want them, but the basic structure is already designed and immediately available. In fact, some of these very sizes are available (unprinted) as stock items on our green packaging www.GlobeGuardProducts.com store.

If you would like to discuss your subscription book program with us, please contact us at www.SalazarPackaging.com or call us at 630-551-1700. Our experienced branded packaging advisors are standing by and eager to help you.

22 Jun 2017 Packaging for Eyewear and Contacts

Warby-Parker, Salazar Packaging, subscription packaging, e-commerce packagingThis time of year, even us Midwesterners are breaking out the sunglasses, and of course, eye glasses have become as much a fashion statement as a necessity. For those in need of vision assistance who don’t like glasses, contact lenses are the preferred choice. Two things they all have in common is that they can all be purchased over the internet, and each require shipping containers.

One of our early branded packaging customers was Warby-Parker. They basically pioneered prescription glasses purchased on line with their HTO (Home Try On) boxes which we manufactured for them. Since then, we have created packaging for many manufacturers of glasses, sun glasses, and specialty contact lenses.

Balancing Protection and Presentation for Eyewear Shipping Containers

We all realize helping the product arrive undamaged is most important, but at the same time the packaging must look great, and it also must be economical. Keep in mind the average pair of glasses might already have multiple layers of packaging:

  1. The primary case that makes direct contact with the product and is likely to be kept and reused by the consumer. (We are NOT a supplier of this type of packaging)
  2. Possibly a rigid (paperboard) box that may or may not be kept and reused by the consumer. (We do design and create rigid wall boxes as well)
  3. The shipping container that is rarely reused or kept by the consumer. This could be a single or multiple like the Bon Look photo below. (we do supply this product)

This helps to understand why the shipping containers (the third item listed) should be effective and affordable because it is a very necessary but usually disposable layer of packaging.

Salazar Packaging, e-commerce, subscription packagingUnboxing Experience for Eyewear

With all this in mind, that all important unboxing experience (presentation) begins on the outer layer, usually a corrugated container. What most shippers don’t realize is that a great looking, custom size and custom printed box is only slightly more expensive than a plain, boring, oversized corrugated box. Not only can a larger (than necessary) box and void fill add cost, it can also add shipping weight and that can be additional cost as well.

Ideally the shipping container allows the product to arrive safely but not look too “industrial.” Reinforcing the brand and image is added value as well, for the shipper as well as the recipient. Here are a few ways you can enhance your box and turn it into more than a shipping container:Salazar Packaging, e-commerce packaging, subscription packaging, custom packaging

  • Custom print the exterior – show off that logo in a registered or very popular random repeat print
  • Custom Print the interior – since the shipping label dominates the exterior, the best place to make a great impression is on the inside of a small container
  • Color – standard white or Kraft as well as flood coats of any Pantone color you require
  • Unusual finishes – soft touch, high gloss, and everything in between is possible with varying minimums
  • Board variations, including triple white and thinner micro flute construction like E and F for strength without bulk

With volume (usually 1,000 boxes or more) just about anything is possible. So please contact us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700 to discuss your application. We have the experience to help you make the best possible impression on your customers.

01 May 2017 Four Most Common Myths About Custom Printed Packaging for E-commerce and Subscription Boxes

Salazar Packaging, packaging myths, e-commerce, subscription, custom printing, custom packagingFour Most Common Myths About Custom Printed Packaging for E-commerce and Subscription Boxes

We receive a lot of phone calls and emails from literally hundreds of people every month and there are a few questions and comments that are repeated time and time again. These four in particular are complete misconceptions, inaccurate, and worth debunking.

Custom printed packaging has huge minimums

I think this one has been intentionally perpetuated by sales people and companies that choose not to sell custom printed products. However, our unpadded custom printed paper mailer envelopes have a minimum that is typically in the hundreds. Even our flexographic printed corrugated boxes have a MOQ of 1,000 which is considered low in an industry where 2,000, 3,000 or even 5,000 is more the norm. “Huge” is a relative term, but our branded packaging advisors are trained to help you determine the best option for your specific application and volume.

I can’t afford custom printed packaging so I use labels

Anyone who believes this has never taken a close look at the cost of labels (in some cases, multiple labels) or factored in the cost of placing them manually on every package going out the door. We won’t even go into the esthetics or consistency since no two manually labeled packages will ever be exactly the same.

For example, by buying custom printed boxes in bulk and eliminating the label (s) being printed and applied, most people see their cost per box REDUCED, not increased. We can help you determine if you can be one of the many companies we know, who are able to increase profitability while decreasing their packaging costs.

Custom printing takes forever

That is what those catalog and website seller of unprinted, stock packaging want you to believe. The fact is that in most cases we ship a NEW, first time order for custom printed boxes within two weeks and a repeat order we can typically get out in one week. We have a variety of stock products on our www.GlobeGuardProducts.com store that can ship immediately, but adding your logo or brand is surprisingly quick and easy.

Custom printing is complicated and I don’t have a graphic artist on staff

Speaking of “easy,” even if this is your first effort at branded packaging, we make custom printing as easy as possible by connecting you to our people who have decades of experience. We know how to make even the most complicated logo or graphic design printable and affordable. While we are not graphic designers, we can recommend you to one who will help you create an eye-catching, low-cost design.

On a related note, if your volume has outgrown your startup or current facility, we can also suggest an outsource fulfillment company that will help you keep up with demand and allow you to focus on growing your business.

We have been creating great looking packaging for e-commerce and subscription boxes for ten years and we have a long list of business contacts and resources able to help you succeed. Let us know what you have in mind for branding or rebranding your packaging by calling us at 630-551-1700 or contact us at Salazar Packaging via email.

07 Apr 2017 Buyers Guide for Rigid Boxes for E-Commerce and Subscription Applications

rigid boxes, subscription packaging, branding, eco-friendly boxesBuyers Guide for Rigid Boxes for E-Commerce and Subscription Applications

They are known by many names including rigid wall boxes, set up boxes, two piece boxes, and even telescoping boxes. They are made of paperboard, not corrugated board, and have been used in the candy, greeting card, and board game industries for decades.

They are gaining in popularity for subscription applications as companies work to deliver value to their customers while creating a permanent or long-term brand presence. These are not shipping boxes, which in most cases are quickly discarded soon after they arrive. Rigid boxes tend to be kept and reused or repurposed. This makes them a greener option but it also means your brand lives on and the box serves as a constant reminder of the company that sent it.

With Appreciation to Birchbox and Others

This type of subscription box has been made popular by companies like Birchbox who understand the value of packaging that is more than a disposable shipping container. This type of packaging makes a great first impression and in many cases provides a series of collectible containers the customer values, encouraging repeat orders and extending subscription life.

rigid boxes, subscription packaging, branding, eco-friendly boxesRigid boxes are also a graphic designer’s dream because unlike direct print flexographic printing (typically used on corrugated), this is a laminating process where sheets of interior and/or exterior paper can be printed any way you want, as many colors as you want, on a wide variety of papers including linens or foils, as well as spot or flood coat coatings. They can also be die cut, creating openings for product display.

Advantages of Rigid Boxes

Compared to other types of boxes they can be made to any size you want without expensive tooling. As mentioned above, the graphics flexibility is incredible and there are few limits to what can be produced.  Rigid boxes offer the ability to vary board color, and wrap exterior as well as lining interior which creates a truly custom look.

The minimum is relatively low at 1,000 though pricing due to setup costs becomes much more attractive in larger quantities of 5,000 or more. You can combine different (same size) copies for larger quantity, bulk pricing. When working with a company like ours, you can create the shipping containers to protect the rigid box in shipping.

rigid boxes, subscription packaging, branding, eco-friendly boxesFactors that Influence Cost of Rigid Boxes

As stated above, order quantity is always a major factor and of course box size also impacts the cost of any box we create. Other factors also include:

  1. Base/bottom and/or top/lid wrapped (exterior) or lined (interior). Anything is possible but it does add cost.
  2. The amount of overlap of the top/lid over the base/bottom. It can overlap 100% or anything less. Keep in mind not totally overlapping the base will likely mean you will have to wrap the exposed base.
  3. Board color of any unlined or unwrapped surface. Natural chip paperboard is the least expensive. White is also available at an upcharge, as well as other colors like black, though they may have a higher minimum.

Disadvantages of Rigid Boxes

They are such an impressive marketing tool that we can only come up with two negatives you should be aware of:

  1. They are not inexpensive and your product price point has to justify the cost of the rigid box as well as the shipping container. People will often ask why/how other companies like Birchbox can afford to use them and I remind them large shippers like them are buying much larger quantities, thereby substantially reducing their cost per unit.
  2. Most boxes and cartons ship flat minimizing the space they require to store and ship. Rigid wall boxes do not collapse, increasing those costs.

Salazar Packaging continues to be a one stop shop for all forms of e-commerce and subscription box packaging. There are few companies in the country with our experience in shipping containers as well as interior/protective packaging solutions.

Please call us at 630-551-1700 or contact us via email at Salazar Packaging to discuss your specific needs. Let us show you how we create effective “packaging that communicates” at a much lower cost than you think possible.

06 Feb 2017 How to Select a Packaging Supplier for your E-Commerce or Subscription Box Application

e-commerce, custom printing, Salazar PackagingIn case you have not noticed, (we certainly have) there are a lot of people dabbling in packaging for e-commerce, and specifically branded packaging. As part of an extensive New Year market analysis we reviewed many of our competitors and compared our list of products and services to theirs.

What we found are a lot of good companies who do just a few things well and that is probably a wise approach for them, especially if they are relatively new to the industry. At our company, our principals have over sixty years of combined experience, our company is on the verge of celebrating our tenth anniversary and we are proud to say we are one of the pioneers in ecofriendly, custom printed e-commerce packaging. We are considered a market innovator, enhancing consumers unboxing experience before it became trendy or the WOW factor was labeled as such.

A Checklist to Help you Make a Good, Long-term Choice

Here are the specifics we suggest you compare and consider when searching for a new supplier to satisfy your e-commerce packaging needs:

  • Does the potential supplier offer a selection of green, eco-friendly packaging options?
  • Does the company offer a variety of branded packaging solutions such as mailer envelopes, and other styles/types of custom boxes such as rigid wall and folding paperboard?.
  • In corrugated, do they have a variety of design options such as FOL, RSC, die cuts or book folds?
  • Does the company have a variety of printing process options such as digital, flexographic or offset?
  • Can they help guide you in terms of graphic design to maximize the impact and minimize prepress (plate/art) charges?
  • Do they have the ability to create custom designs and sizes?
  • Can they create custom internal packaging solutions for protection and presentation such as molded pulp, foam, die cut corrugated, etc?
  • Have they helped create hundreds of successful, attractive e-commerce boxes? (Please see our web site gallery for examples)

All of the Above?

Few companies can claim a positive answer to all of the questions listed above but without hesitation we can. In this age when there are so many “specialists” focused on one thing, a broader and more experienced perspective can save you valuable time and money.

Will branded RSC boxes or mailer envelopes cost less to implement? How can you reduce your labor or shipping cost? What is the best way to cushion and protect your product? How can you best print your five color logo? Is digital the best print option for my graphic design?

Putting ink on a box is easy. Printing a great looking box is considerably more difficult and developing a perfect packaging solution or strategy is not something that everyone is equipped to do.

For “packaging that communicates” please feel free to contact us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700* for a no cost, no obligation review of your specific needs.

05 Dec 2016 Owl Crate Jr. Delivers the WOW factor to an Even Younger Children’s Book Market

Owlcrate, flexographic printing, custom printing, e-commerce, subscription packagingWhoever said the digital media explosion would result in the ultimate demise of printed paper books obviously did not realize the only thing that is really changing is the way books are purchased and delivered. I admit I have been surprised by the number of subscription book boxes that we have helped launch successfully. Books for different demographics, different ages, and different genres are all unique and growing in popularity.

Owl Crate Now Serves 8-12 year old readers

One of our favorite book selling customers is Owl Crate and we have been grateful to produce their standard black on Kraft “young adult” printed boxes. When they decided to launch a program aimed at 8-12 year olds, they wisely decided that their new box not only had to be different dimensionally, it should also have a little more “pop” in graphics while still maintaining their brand identity.

Owl Crate Jr.e-commerce, custom printed shipping boxes, subscription packaing is born

As I have often written, we are not graphic artists, but after printing hundreds and hundreds of boxes, we certainly know what works and what will not. We also know how to get the most for your money, minimizing box and pre-press costs like cutting dies and print plates.

Surprisingly, this experienced, knowledgeable graphics guidance we offer is free to you and your graphic artist. BTW if you don’t have one, we can refer you to one that understands the advantages and limitations of a good graphic design for flexographic corrugated printing.

We worked with our friends at Owl Crate and helped them come up with a great, flexographic printable design that is one color flood coat over white board inside and blue and white ink over Kraft board on the outside. The end result is a beautiful, eye catching print with only three print plates.

If you need a holiday gift idea for that young book worm on your gift list, check out their holiday offering at: http://owlcrate.com/ocjr. If you want to talk to someone about creating a wonderful customer experience with your e-commerce packaging, contact us via email at Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700.

29 Nov 2016 Unico Nutrition’s Packaging Is Designed for Double Duty Use, Inside and Outside

reverse print | Unico Nutrition | Salazar PackagingThe goal of branding is to always create a great impression. Unfortunately, that positive message is short lived since the packaging used for e-commerce typically ends up in a recycle bin.

Unico Nutrition creates unique dual purpose graphic design

Unico Nutrition makes excellent natural sport supplements for women. They are also a very clever, unique company that decided to give their e-commerce packaging a second life by designing it so it can be unassembled, colored, and reformed inside out for use long after the product it contained is received and consumed.

We all know e-commerce boxes take a beating during shipment and typically arrive looking dirty, banged up, and covered with tape and labels. However, the inside of the box is usually clean and pristine, so being able to turn the good/clean face out is the key to an extended box life and repurposing the packaging.

The brand lives on!

Whether a dual side use and print is for coloring or decorating or simply for a unique storage box that is more likely to be kept or used – the branding continues to impress and be noticed. After all, isn’t that the primary goal of all good branding and custom printing efforts?

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have an idea you want to discuss. As usual, the minimum is a low 1,000 boxes and will require the purchase of print plates inside and outside, but that onetime expense can clearly make your marketing and branding efforts that much more effective.

You can call us at 630-551-1700 or contact Salazar Packaging via email so one of our trained and experienced branded packaging advisors can help you get the maximum wow factor for the lowest possible cost.
