E-Commerce and Subscription Packaging for Children

Boxes for Kid's products, e-commerce, subscription packaging, Children's e-commerceWe make a tremendous number of packaging containers for children’s and baby’s clothing, but in addition to all of those, we also make boxes for games, toys, and activities. They range from early childhood development focused boxes to complex science and STEM programs.

Whatever the product being shipped, the packaging objective remains the same: the product to the recipient safely and securely, at minimal expense. Ideally in a box that is bright, interesting, and visually pleasing to the child receiving it.

There are two basic types of corrugated boxes for kids’ e-commerce and subscription boxes:

Die cut mailers – they have a lid that is attached at the back and they open like a cigar or presentation box. They are a low 1,000 box MOQ for most applications and you can select from our list of over 150 stock cutting die sizes.

RSC style shipping boxes –  these are traditional shipping boxes with four flaps on top and four flaps on the bottom. These are low cost and particularly effective when other, smaller boxes are shipping within.

We can further customize your kid boxes with custom printing outside, custom printing inside (die cut mailers only) and child friendly carrying handles that kids love.

Boxes for kid's products, e-commerce, subscription packaging, Children's packagingFor a quick price estimate, all we need is a few details:

  1. Quantity being ordered (1,000 MOQ)
  2. Size – length X width X height
  3. Board color (in and out) white or natural Kraft (brown)
  4. Number of ink colors inside and/or outside

This will enable us to give you a surprisingly accurate estimate that will prove true unless you decide to change any of the critical specs.

Feel free to contact us via email at Salazar Packaging with any questions or call us at 630-551-1700. Kids love receiving packages and we can help you make a great impression that begins at the unboxing experience.

07 Mar 2017 Are Brown Boxes More Eco-friendly Than White Boxes?

kraft box, white box, eco-friendly, Are Brown Boxes More Eco-friendly Than White Boxes?

That is most definitely a FAQ from our green minded customers and the answer is definitely yes, probably, in most cases. If that answer seems vague or non-committal, it is by design. The fact is there are many different ways to look at any packaging product’s greenness, and even more ways we can impact the natural sustainable features of packaging by what we do to it. Allow me to explain.

Green Packaging has always been a matter of perspective

Some people look at packaging strictly from a source perspective. What percentage of it is made of recycled content and what is that source. Post-consumer waste is rated much higher (greener) than post production waste, and that is better than virgin material.

Others are more concerned about packaging in terms of how easily it can be reused or if necessary, how it can be disposed of and/or recycled. As most people know, paper based packaging is typically much easier to recycle compared to plastic based packaging but it varies depending on a number of factors including type, and how it is printed or laminated.

Enhancing the Customer Experience

Making the box look sharp does not always mean making it more expensive or complicated. We apply the KISS principle as much as possible because we know that over designing a shipping box adds cost and in most cases makes it less eco-friendly. Adding costly finishes to any box almost always has a negative impact on how it can be recycled and re-pulped so we prefer to increase the proverbial “WOW factor” by using screens, well printed colors, and last but not least – good substrates. No one can create a great looking print on cheap or substandard board, but it does not have to be expensive; just consistent.

Why we usually suggest brown board for a box exterior

MOST board with a white side in or out, is NOT 100% recycled content. White is typically virgin paper, that does not make it bad, in fact it makes for a great printing surface, but it is definitely not green if the goal is to use as much recycled content as possible.

In addition to the obvious green benefit, brown board is typically 5 to 6% less expensive compared to white board. Darker colors, such as dark blue, brown, and black print beautifully over natural Kraft Board, as do lighter colors like white and most pastels. However, the main reason we usually suggest brown board has nothing to do with relative greenness or material cost.

Simply put – brown boxes arrive looking better. Whether you ship UPS, FedEx or USPS, every box you ship is handled countless times and each time it ends up a little dirtier and beat up. This rough handling is much less obvious on brown board than it is on white board.

eco-friendly shipping box, custom printed boxHowever, the box interior usually arrives in perfect condition!

This is why we have become a leading designer of e-commerce boxes with interior prints. People can’t wait to open a box that just arrived, and we make sure they are greeted with a great looking box that creates the enhanced experience which is the goal of most shippers. That interior inside lid of a die cut mailer is a great printing surface for anything from a brief thank you to product use or assembly instructions, and can be inexpensively printed where they are not going to be missed or lost.

We believe this is such a great marketing tool that we have made it easy for companies to add or change an interior print, long after the box is first launched or printed. (see first related post below) It is never too late to make a great and memorable impression.

custom printed boxes, flood coatWhite exteriors for flood coat designs

If a graphic design is going to require edge to edge (flood coat) printing, we will usually recommend that printing is done on a white surface rather than brown. Natural (brown) Kraft varies in color so anything printed over it may also reflect that same shade variance. So the easy way to achieve beautiful solid color is to print it over white board.

That also makes reverse printing much easier, creating white copy that really pops. If you check out some of the boxes in our gallery, they look like they are printed white ink over a solid color but the reality is that they are a solid color ink printed over white board. The end result creates a much sharper two color look using only one color ink and one print plate.

If all this sounds complicated, it is, but not for people who do this day in and day out. We know how to create the best looking package at the lowest possible cost and will help you accomplish whatever your goals might be whether they are about color, cost, sustainability or even weight reduction for minimizing shipping costs.

22 Sep 2016 White Printing on Kraft (Brown) Corrugated Boxes

3-shades-of-white-on-kraft-boxesWhen I first started blogging about sustainable and branded packaging my concern was that I would run out of material after a few months. However, hundreds of posts and several years later, we are still going strong, mostly because of great questions and inquiries from customers and potential customers.

This week I was once again told by a customer that a different supplier had indicated “you cannot direct print white on Kraft corrugated board.” So I decided it would be a great blog post topic to correct this common misconception.

White on Kraft Branding – Tricky But Not Impossible

A quick visit to our gallery on our website shows several boxes that are printed white on Kraft, so obviously it can be done. The challenge is creating the specific shade of white a customer may want. We have successfully printed three slightly different versions:

  1. Low density – a transparent, almost white wash look which is the common preference for many ecofriendly products because of its soft, “natural” look.
  2. Medium density – semi opaque for slightly sharper graphics
  3. High density – a pure white that we can apply heavily to achieve almost full opacity for greatest white to Kraft color contrast.

To accomplish the third (high intensity) level we typically use an ink formulation that our people helped develop. Our ink supplier has named it “Salazar White” because it differs from most other whites in that opacity is achieved without reducing the overall whiteness. In other words, we do not create opacity by making the white more gray.

inside-reverse-print-on-white-boardTotal Opacity Guarantee?

The big variables in direct printing are board porosity and board color. Natural Kraft board can range from a light brown (tan) to a darker shade of brown and even at times with a hint of red. Just like no two trees are identical, no two boxes are identical. That color difference can be even greater on high recycled content board like we offer.

Corrugated board also varies in porosity which determines how it absorbs ink, a large contributing factor in ink color density. Corrugated is like a sponge and it absorbs humidity. So a box will print differently on a cold January day than it will on a hot and steamy July day. We cannot control how much ink soaks into the board and how much sits on top of the board creating the printed copy. We can try to manage white density and we succeed the vast majority of the time, but there are variables we simply cannot control.

The only way we or anyone can guarantee 100% opacity of white is to reverse print it with a flood coat over white board. By reverse printing the copy, we are actually printing color around the white which is actually not printed at all. The white comes from the board color itself.

If all this sounds complicated, it can be, but not for our branded packaging advisors who have the experience and tools to print just about any color you want on any of our boxes.

Please feel free to contact us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700 if you have any question on this or any other facet of your branded packaging program.

03 Sep 2015 Why Use Globe Guard® Stock Mailer Boxes?

Globe Guard Stock Unprinted Subscription BoxesIf you are pre-launch or just getting started on your subscription box or e-commerce program, there is no better or more eco-friendly way to begin shipping your customers’ orders. Globe Guard® boxes are always at least 60% recycled content, as well as 100% recyclable, repulpable, biodegradable and even compostable.

Professional packaging look/ Small Investment

The most important benefit they provide a startup company or product is the fact that only a minimal investment is necessary. You can select a stock, popular size from our mailer box section of our www.GlobeGuardProducts.com store and order a bundle of as few as 25 or 50 boxes. Adding a custom printed label provides the initial branding and you are on your way!

A partial group of subscription boxes we've runWe know many have been dreaming for weeks, months, or even years about the way their custom printed box is going to look. Some sadly discover their vision is not practical or in some cases, even printable. Using a stock box can help a company get started until the business and volume can help justify the vision.

Additional benefits of using a stock box in the beginning

Above and beyond the minimal investment mentioned above, and saving money at a time when you may have zero or little cash flow, there are other advantages of using a stock, unprinted Globe Guard ® box:

  • They make it easy to implement a packaging “plan B” if necessary.

What if your initial box ends up being too short, to narrow, or too tall? You start out with no history about products, customer preferences or volume, so everything is essentially a guess. If you guess wrong, changing sizes is so much easier and less expensive if you haven’t already invested possibly hundreds or even thousands of dollars in a cutting die, print plates, or a minimum order quantity (MOQ) of 1,000 boxes.

  • Custom printing is inflexible.

I often tell people the true story of how we rebranded our company six months after we officially launched. Customer feedback indicated the name was too long and our tag line and logo confusing. So before we had too much invested in our initial brand, we chose to re-brand. The less you have invested the better until you gain some of that all important customer feedback.

  • Converting to custom printed boxes is a breeze, when you are ready!

If you have been using one of our stock, unprinted boxes, and the size is working perfectly for you, and your volume and cash flow grow, we can easily begin custom printing that specific box size for you. We can grow as you grow with a basic one color design to get started, maybe you add a second exterior color later, and then possibly you add inside print as your brand grows and you are ready to eliminate some more manually applied stickers and labels.

When is the right time to switch to custom printed boxes?

The answer varies from one situation to another mostly focused on affordability and how sure you are that you will not be making any other changes soon. Print plates cannot be modified so the goals are no regrets and no unnecessary expenses. I usually suggest waiting at least 90 days after launch or when you get up to 300 to 400 shipments or subscribers per month

As always, if in doubt, email us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700. We will be glad to discuss your specific needs with you.

28 Aug 2015 Adding inside print to an existing subscription or e-commerce box

Inside of lid - great place to add logo or tag line

We are proud to have helped hundreds of people create packaging for their new, start-up companies. One thing most have in common is that they typically do not have deep pockets. Even the ones that are crowd funded understand that limited available funds have to cover a lot of different and often times unexpected expenses.

Inside Prints – now or later?

Printing inside of any die cut mailer is very effective. No matter how beat up the exterior of the box becomes in shipment, the interior is always free of scrapes, dirt, tape, and labels. That can make the inside a great place to place additional artwork or graphics.

The problem is that printing inside can be expensive when you are just getting started, It typically adds about 30% to the cost of any die cut mailer box, plus of course, each inside color requires an additional print plate. These costs and expenses come at a time when you can least afford them and cash flow is minimal or non-existent.

Mailer inside print made easyUpgrading and updating your boxes’ branding.

As soon as you have hundreds of subscribers and customers and some cash flow, you may be able to add inside printing to your box. This is not only done for enhanced appearance, in some cases it can eliminate insert and/or labels being manually applied.

We recently added inside print for a customer that was spending over $.25 each (PLUS LABOR) for a manually applied label. In addition to the cost, his concern was that the labels were rarely applied straight, and never applied the same way twice. Adding inside print can reduce material and labor cost and deliver brand consistency and a more professional look.

What is involved to add inside print?random repeat print dresses up mailer box interior

Just like the outside, you will need a print plate for each color. We can print virtually anything on white or Kraft board, from simple text to a rich flood coat, a random repeat print, or reverse print logo or text. Printing inside is an additional step and does add cost per box, but not as much as you may think. On a typical $.70 mailer, it would only add approximately $.20 per box

See the examples shown on this post and on our gallery and let us know if you have any additional questions. Whether we are currently running your boxes or someone else is, please contact us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700 for a confidential review of your specific needs.

17 Aug 2015 Globe Guard® Min-Weight™ Boxes Maximize Customer Value and Minimize Shipping costs for Universal Yums

One color on white Min-Weight boxesCurrently shipping costs are rising much faster than profit margins for many e-commerce and subscription box brand owners. Some take the easy route and simply reduce the size and weight of the boxes they ship by simply giving their customers less.

The people at Universal Yums were determined to continue providing their customers with as much of their delicious international treats as possible. It was that commitment that first caught our attention. They asked us to help engineer a solution that would eliminate unnecessary, redundant corrugated board and it was not nearly as simple as it sounds. Eliminating corrugated board to reduce overall package weight can be tricky because you do not want to reduce the box design’s strength. As we tell people, the problem is not your three pound package, it is the thirty pound package that ends up on top of yours, that creates the problem.

A peek inside a Min-Weight boxDesign, Redesign and Testing Produces Great Results

“Every ounce counts” was the customer’s direction so we started strategically eliminating board that we thought would not weaken the box’s strength. We worked with different cut outs and a variety of board grades and quite frankly, not all of our designs satisfied the requirements. Our designers created multiple versions before we arrived at the following:

  1. Top tuck mailer that is 10-1/2” X 8-1/2” X 3-1/2” – empty weight of approximately 5.4 ounces* custom printed
  2. Top tuck mailer that is 8” X 5” X 3” – empty weight of approximately 2.8 ounces* custom printed

*NOTE- paper/board weight varies and printing ink adds weight as well so our   recommendation is always to stay well under target weight to avoid going over.

Min-Weight™ Boxes Now Available For You!

We liked this design and results so much that we decided to add these two cutting dies to our inventory of over 45 different available sizes and styles. If they are not the correct size for you, talk to us about a custom print, custom size, that will help you promote your brand while helping you reduce your shipping costs.

Contact us at Salazar Packaging or call us at 630-551-1700 if you have any questions, would like to see samples or would like to discuss your specific needs. We recently helped a customer reduce their shipping costs by $2.00 per box by keeping their box under the USPS one pound rate, and we can probably help you achieve similar results.

5-13/16” X 5-3/4” X 1-15/16” – We call this one our 5-5-2 mailer box, though technically it is closer to 6-6-2. It is also a top tuck design and is used often for jewelry and cosmetics.

11” X 12” X 2” – This is an E-flute, top tuck box that delivers more of a retail (less industrial) look. It is still plenty strong and makes a great presentation box for clothing as well as books.

11-12-2, E-flute, top tuck mailer11-1/8” X 8-5/8” X 7/8” high – This unique box is great for everything from books and sheet music to tee-shirts. See this recent post.

13 Mar 2015 Time 4 Forgiveness Selects Salazar Packaging for Their Custom Printed Packaging Needs

The Ravine book and braceletWe are always proud of the work we do and if it is not right, it simply does not ship to our customers. There are times however, especially when we are working with a non-profit organization that are even more careful than usual about board quality, color matching, and overall workmanship. We also take a little extra pride in the finished product because we know it is helping a good cause.

www.Time4Forgiveness.org

As their web site points out, today over 3,000 men or women will join the three million people who are incarcerated in the United States. The statistics are astonishing and depressing, making this national problem appear to be beyond repair.

Time 4 Forgiveness is an organization of people determined to reverse that tide by developing greater understanding through a book they offer inmates, The Ravine. You can learn more about the book at their web site and if/when you read the book, you will understand the need to share it with others, especially the men and women who live in prison.

One color, reverse print on white of 9-6-2 boxSemi-Custom Branded Packaging

They needed a shipping container to mail out books and our very popular 9” X 6-1/2” X 2-3/4” was the perfect size to accommodate multiple copies of the paperback book they distribute. Without the cost of delay of a custom cutting die, we were able to get custom printed mailer boxes to them within a couple of short weeks, just in time for their launch.

The process is designed to be fast and simple, especially for first time buyers of branded packaging. Each step is designed to be efficient to minimize cost, and precise to avoid any mistakes. Others may attempt to make custom printed branded packaging an incredibly difficult and expensive task but most of our customers are pleased to find out the cost, in many cases, is actually lower due to increased purchase quantities. Remember the minimum for custom printing boxes is 1,000, so the net end result can be a lower cost per box compared to that unprinted stock box they have been using.

12 Jan 2015 The Beauty of Semi-Custom Packaging for E-commerce and Subscription Box Programs

A quick stroll through our new photo gallery section at our Salazar Packaging web site quickly shows the great variety of looks and designs we have helped our customers create. The minimalists typically prefer very little ink and the use of soft, subtle colors. Others believe in creating a memorable design by using lots of ink in bright or dark colors. Neither approach is wrong, as long as it is consistent with your products and brand.

Here is a closer look at some more recent boxes we’ve done that have created great looking boxes by using our semi-custom box sizes and adding their own bold graphic designs.

9-6-2 mailer box black over whiteWellpod – you can never go wrong with basic black, especially for a cosmetic or beauty product. The problem is that black or any solid dark color can prove difficult to print using a flexographic process on corrugated board. Wellpod trusted us with the packaging for their new beauty product line and the results were terrific using our standard 9x6x2 top lock mailer shipping box. Their site is worth waiting for and will be ready for business soon at www.wellpodbeauty.com

dark brown over white mailer boxBush & Leavenworth – they describe themselves as a clothing brand designed for creative people and they are quite consistent down to their shipping boxes. They took our basic 13x13x3 box and created a great looking mailer box with minimal copy outside and great graphics inside – all in a beautiful dark brown. Check out their site which is equally unique and eye catching – www.bushleavenworth.com

8-9-4 one color with screensJoe’s Brew Club – If you are a coffee lover you will undoubtedly enjoy their product, site, and new box. They took our stock 8x9x4 box, and by using screens, created a very attractive three color look using only one color, minimizing ink and print plate cost. Please visit their site at www.joesbreclub.com

S9-6-2 mailer box with printing inside and outkosh Box – This new DEKA box program delivers full size Japanese snacks to their subscribers. They also used our very popular 9x6x2 box but probably created the brightest design we have ever printed. You think the bright yellow exterior is bold until you open the box and realize the inside turquoise is even bolder. You can learn more about their program at www.skoshbox.com

What is semi-custom packaging?

Essentially it is using a box size that we already have a cutting die for to save time and money. We have over forty available sizes so we can usually satisfy almost every dimensional need, avoiding an additional one week delay for cutting die manufacturing, not to mention the typical $600 to $800 cost.

The minimum run is only 1,000 boxes and we can usually ship a first time order within two weeks of receiving final, approved art.

Not quite ready for custom printed packaging?

Take a look at the stock die cut mailers sizes available on our green packaging store at www.GlobeGuardProducts.com.
